If you want to learn effective self defense, martial arts classes are a great place to start. These classes to train you how to physically defend yourself from an attack and how to prevent yourself from being injured. However, self-defense classes draw heavy inspiration from martial arts but often they do not follow any one specific style.

Many self defense classes teach you what to do when attacked but don't let them teach you how to protect yourself. The more you can do to avoid injury during an attack, the more likely you are to be able to escape. Don't let anyone tell you that you need to fight back or that you have to physically fight back. Remember that there is always a way to defend yourself, even if the person trying to hurt you is much bigger or stronger than you.
Secondly, don't be afraid to tell the instructor that you're not going to take it seriously. In many cases, martial arts instructors assume that their students will act just as if they were in a professional wrestling match. They assume that if they are worried about kicks and punches they will show that they are strong enough to withstand a confrontation with a dangerous attacker. Unfortunately, this isn't true and instructors need to realize that martial arts instructors are people, too, just like you and me.
Finally, keep in mind that martial arts self defense techniques do not work on a level playing field with strangers. You may be a confident fighter who has never felt vulnerable in his life, but being attacked by a complete stranger has the ability to make him freeze up. This isn't to say that you should be scared of walking alone at night or that you should never leave your doors unlocked, but you do need to understand that self-defense situations are different. If you feel that you could be a victim of a mugger at any time, keep in mind that you could also be a victim of a home invasion or domestic violence.
By taking self-defense classes and learning some self-defense techniques, you can reduce your chances of becoming a victim. Even if you never have to use these techniques, learning them can help you minimize your exposure to situations that might lead to a dangerous confrontation.
